Hey, Brian Sloan right here. Did I see cigarettes in the hands of a few of you? Yep, I believe I did. Well, should I preach a sermon to you? Actually, I'm a pastor. I mean I possess an ordination certification and can perform weddings and all types of cool things. Aren't you impressed? Yeah, right. Didn't think so. However, I love doing what I do. But certainly I digress.....back again to the cigarettes ...Not going to preach... I'm just not going to be judgmental towards you if you're a smoker. You understand why? It's because I have too many faults in my life to try to implicate you for smoking.
Here's just what I think. If Jesus himself was in a room filled with cigarette smokers and non-smokers, He would be much more concerned about several of the soul and heart concerns or (secret sins maybe) as much as he would be with somebody that has a cigarette smoking habit. So, I'm not down on my friends who smoke. Sorry.
Am I standing up for smoking? Heck no! (Remember I have to say stuff like "heck" since I'm a clergyman). I desire that my friends would quit smoking- not due to the fact that I believe they are some large evildoer compared to me - not because it smells bad (and it does) but, because it literally gets rid of wonderful people. We understand that. Each year, an estimated 443,000 individuals perish too soon from smoking cigarettes or direct exposure to secondhand smoke. Apart from that, an additional 8.6 million people live with significant illnesses induced by cigarette smoking.
If you go into the physicians clinic with an awful heart problem or a simple ingrown toenail, exactly what's the first thing he's going to \point out? Uh huh. Quit smoking cigarettes. So, unlike numerous financial or political policy debates, the manmade global warming debate, and so on, the debate over smoking cigarettes has actually long been decided. Smoking is bad. Reeeeally bad. So, as a minister, no - not just as a minister, however as friend and/or relative of those who smoke, just how can we ideally encourage our friends to quit?
The good friends I've had who smoke normally had a desire to stop, however, simply could not quite get there. However, to stop you have to do a few things. Here are some proven suggestions to help.
Determine. Draw the line in the sand and do it. Period. I don't mean a crash detox, however, determine that it WILL CERTAINLY HAPPEN.
Partner with an additional smoker that wants to quit. This is a wonderful way to do it. You have an edge when you start with an accountability companion who is going through the same thing.
Acquire assistance from your doctor. There are a heck of a lot of people (oops, one more preacher curse word) who have been successful battling the nicotine desires by using meds like Zyban or Wellbutrin, which is basically the very same thing.
If you start the journey to quit then slip up and smoke, do not hammer on yourself. Simply get back at it. If your objective is to be free from the habit in 2 months, and it takes you six months - bingo! Aren't you still successful?
You can do it. Receive aid from buddies. Acquire assistance from your medical professional, and you can acquire motivation from people like me. Don't allow smoking cigarettes to continue to hurt you. You're worth too much to us all! You're worth too much to your maker! You can definitely do this!
Decide. Partner with a friend if at all possible. Get advice and even an appropriate drug from your Doctor. And..Get up if you stumble! Blessings to you!
