If you are the kind of person who likes to set goals, SMART goals are the way to go. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. In this article, I'd like to discuss each part of a SMART goal so that when you sit down to write out your goals, you will be able to have wonderful clarity.

Specific, as opposed to general, is the way to go when setting goals. When being specific, calculate exactly what the goal is, why you want to accomplish the goal, and how you plan on doing it.

For example, you goal, "being healthy", is too vague. Be clear and specific. State, "I wish to be healthy and stop eating sugar," which is crystal clear.

Making SMART goals requires that the goals be measurable. What this means is that you can actually see or measure progress toward the goal. For example, the goal, "I want to be a good skier," is not really measurable. Instead, a measurable goal would be, "I want to be able to ski medium level slopes by the end of winter".

You make sure that you can in fact achieve the goals you set within a particular quantity of time. If you set objectives that are not achievable or set a period of time that is impossible, you will set yourself up for irritation and failure. Be sure that your SMART goals are attainable and achievable in the time frame you set.

For instance, if you wish to lose 20 pounds by spring. Set up milestones, lose 5 pounds per month for 4 months. This way you will reach your goal in simple steps.

SMART goals are realistic. If you are a below average golfer and do not have a lot of free time to devote to golf, having a goal to become a professional golfer might not be realistic for you. If you want to begin eating healthy, having the goal of never eating sugar again might to be realistic.

SMART goals are timely. Try to set time limits to your goals that are realistic for you. If you have a lot of free time and can go after your goals wholeheartedly, the time frame can be shorter than if you are occupied most of your time. A mother with a full-time job and four small children may not be able to accomplish the goal of becoming fluent in Spanish in one month. She probably won't have that much time to devote to it, so she should think about making the time frame longer so she doesn't put too much pressure on herself.

As you set about achieving your objectives throughout life, keep in mind to apply the SMART concept and you will discover that you achieve your objectives more effectively. There are basically two types of putt. The lag putt is a long distance putt and at least ten feet from the hole. The aim here is to put the ball as close to the hole as possible. The short putt needs to be accurate enough to be put in the hole each time. This will save the frustration of requiring extra putts just to finish a hole. Getting the distance accurate is the most important factor for long putts. Line is more important on short putts.

Practice will enable you to better judge the weight needed to hit the ball a particular distance. Practice this skill by placing two markers in a line a short distance apart. Stand back a few yards and hit the ball so that it stops between the two marks. As you improve, move the markers closer together. Aim at hitting ten consecutive balls between the markers. Once you are able to do that, move a couple of yards further away from the markers and try again. Then move closer.

With time, this exercise will improve your accuracy to a remarkable degree. It is now time to try hitting random distances with each stroke. Toss a coin or marker on the green and putt to it. Pick up the coin and throw it randomly again. Repeat this process, aiming for accuracy with every shot.

Next, work on improving your line. Place markers a golf ball width apart. Stand back six inches and hit between the markers without touching them. Again, practice until you can get ten balls through in a row. Move back a little and repeat the exercise.

These drills should be done on a level surface to start with. Once you feel you have improved to a significant degree, try the same exercises on a slope. Keep your head steady and still. Lifting the head too early causes the putter to move out of alignment.

Make sure you're not holding your breath but are breathing normally. Take two or three deep breaths to help relax your muscles. Aim at a pendulum-type swing. Stabbing actions or flicking the wrists can cause the ball to bounce instead of rolling and accuracy will be lost.

Reading the green comes with experience. Once you are more confident with pace and line, reading the green becomes easier. Take note of how the ball often curves to the hole. Greens vary in their speed. Weather conditions affect how greens play. The ball tends to sink in wet grass and not travel as fast. Going uphill, the ball will need a little more impetus. Check and remove allowable obstacles such as twigs and stones. Note areas of sand which might alter the speed. Always mark the ball's position before picking it up to clean it.
