Interview by Lon Woodbury
The co-founder of the Brain Balance Success Centers and the Brain Balance Program, Dr. Robert Melillo spoke to L.A. Talk Radio host Lon Woodbury from strugglingteens.com about how to help parents of autistic children. The guest described his work in resolving many issues related to the diagnosis and treatment of Autism, as well as associated learning disorders like ADHD, Dyslexia, and Asperger's Syndrome.
About
Dr. Robert Melillo is an author, lecturer, clinician and researcher who speaks around the world on Autism. He is a recognized authority in the treatment of neurology, neuropsychology and neurobehavioral disorders in children. The co-founder of the Brain Balance Achievement Centers uses a multi-modal approach to working with ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, Asperger's, Tourette's, and other neurobehavioral impairments discovered in children.
Dr. Melillo has also written two books for parents focusing on brain imbalances in children: "Disconnected Kids" and "Reconnected Kids." His third book, "Autism: The Scientific Truth About Preventing, Diagnosing, and Treating Autism Spectrum Disorders - and What Parents Can Do Now," is now available.
New Optimism for Parents of Autistic Children:
The interview explored recent research findings that are helping to develop new understanding about Autism and its treatment.
There is an expanding body of verifiable knowledge that suggests that the alarming rise in Autism seems to be principally due to environmental causes. "We are seeing substantial increases in Autism due to toxic additives in food and water," explained Dr. Melillo.
After factoring out an increase in enhanced diagnosis and a modification in the diagnostic requirements, the increase in autism and other learning disorders has actually still increased at an alarming rate.
Dr. Melillo provided a clear description behind the causes of the increase in Autism and also provided a thoughtful analysis of a scientifically-based method for prevention and treatment. He recommended several important steps for parents to avoid having children with Autism. He outlined pre-conception and pre-natal preparation by future parents as well as recommended early diagnosis to enable correct intervention.
In fact, he said that a spontaneous decision to have a child should be a thing of the past. Mothers should spend a year preparing their bodies for pregnancy. Only two decades ago, the likelihood of having a child with autism was 1 in 10,000. Today it is 1 in 88. Many causes of Autism could be prevented through keeping tabs on biomarkers and a preparation period that included stress-reduction, exercise, and proper nutrition. Mothers-to-be needed to choose organic fruits and vegetables to avoid pesticides and to make sure they were getting Vitamin D, folic acid, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin E, and Omega-3 fatty acids. They also needed to avoid sugar, gluten, and artificial sweeteners, as well as avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea, and soda.
Dr. Mellilo also pointed out that disorders like ADHD, Autism, Asperger's Syndrome,Tourette's Syndrome, PDD-NOS, and Learning Disorders like Dyslexia revealed striking similarities. Today, these disorders are now considered points on a common spectrum. Where the child falls on the spectrum is dependent on the severity of the imbalance and the specific regions effected within the brain.
Besides a discussion of his work in diagnosing, treating, and preventing Autism and his work in assisting parents of autistic children deal with an extremely challenging condition, the meeting included a discussion on the difference between the brains of men and women, exactly how Autism often caused both gifts and deficits, and the appropriate place of a medical diagnosis in helping those with Autism.
