Types Of Christ Prophesied In The Bible

By Stephanie Green

Is Jesus the prophesied Son of God? How is He portrayed in the two testaments? Is there a link between the old and New Testament in reference to Jesus? The answer lies in examining the types of Christ in the two testaments. The angle of the antichrist will not be explored, rather how the different manifestations are captured in the two testaments.

Tree of Life. The bible refers to the tree in different words. It is a vine, olive, branch and such other words. Trees are naturally known to be the homes of birds and other animals. They also provide them with food. Genesis chapter 2 verse 9 refer to a tree planted in the middle of the garden. This is the same tree referred to in Revelations chapter 22 verse 2 where the tree, in reference to Jesus, becomes the source of healing for human kind.

The Ark. When Noah was building the ark, it was meant to save people from the destructive floods. The story is in Genesis 7,16. The gospel of John 10,28 points at Jesus giving people who come to him life so that no one can take it away from them. Without Jesus, they would perish, just like those who were outside the ark.

Passover Lamb. Israelites had to offer an unblemished lamb before leaving Egypt into freedom. Exodus 12, 29 captures this perfectly. Without that offering, the people would face death when the angle passed by. When John the Baptist saw Jesus approaching him to be baptized, he confessed that he was the Son of God who takes away the sins of man. The mention in this case is direct and unmistakable.

Manna. Israelites had a hard time in their journey through the desert because they lacked food. God sent them food in form of manna as captured in Exodus chapter 16. This is an indication that God is the food and the supplier of that food to his people. In John chapter 6 and verse 35, Jesus says he is the bread of life, and whoever comes to him will never hunger or thirst. Jesus is the new form of manna for Christians.

The Rock that oozes salvation and life. When Israelites had not water, Moses was instructed to strike a rock in Exodus chapter 17. This scene is repeated at Calvary during the passion of Christ. Water comes from the side of Christ after he was speared. Reference is made again in 1st Corinthians 10 where people drank spiritual water from Christ the rock.

A temple for refuge. Safety and life in the Old Testament came from having a temple in their midst for Israelites. This is why 1st Kings 6 captures Israelites building one. However, Jesus declares in Chapter 2 of the gospel of John that if the temple was destroyed, he would rebuild it in just 3 days. He said this pointing at his death and resurrection.

There is no denying that Jesus features in both the old and new testaments. The similarities are unmistakably vivid. If automatically follows that Jesus is the Son of God referred to in many images and fulfilled in gospels of the New Testament.
