Can Injured Former Members Of The Armed Forces That Are Receiving A Disability Grant Successfully Apply For VA Disability Loans?

By Leslie Ball

Two of the main functions of our armed services are to ensure the safety of this country and to confront terrorists in many parts of the world. Armed service units that are deployed to fulfil these roles are staffed by courageous men and women. Being in the military is a risky job and a lot of armed forces personnel risk their lives almost every day. Sometimes it happens that military personnel sustain an injury, receive a grant from the VA and need to apply for VA disability loans in order to be able to afford to return to society.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of armed conflict not everyone makes it out unscathed. Functioning in an active army, navy or air force role can be very dangerous. Some members of the military will be injured while performing their duties.

Armed forces members sometimes sustain injuries that are temporary in nature and from which they will recover given enough time and good medical treatment. Sometimes though they sustain more serious injuries that result in permanent disability. In addition to the more easily noticed physical injuries, some members also suffer from psychiatric conditions that can be severe enough to be classified as a disability, for example post-traumatic stress disorder.

Military members that suffer a serious injury are often discharged from the military on medical grounds. Usually, these former military members will receive medical treatments from a VA medical center. They may also receive a financial grant to assist with medical expenses and to help them get back into normal civilian society.

However, re-integrating into civilian life can be expensive and many former military personnel will look for a loan to help them re-establish themselves. There is a perception among certain people that it is harder for military veterans to get financing compared to regular civilians. This is not always the reality, though. In fact, some loan providers actually give preferential deals to former military personnel that are drawing a VA grant.

Military veterans would do well to target lenders that show a willingness to lend money to people that have served their country by being part of the military. By doing this they may be in a position where they are offered better lending terms than the average borrower. It is also possible that their application is subjected to less stringent consideration criteria.

Recipients of grants awarded because they were disabled while in the military are sometimes offered home loans that require a low down payment, or possibly even no down payment. Some lenders realize that veterans receiving disability grants get money from the VA every month should be able to use this money to pay off reasonable loans. The inherent personal discipline of former military members combined with the financial security of a grant makes them good potential customers for loan companies.

The fact that loans can be provided to VA grant recipients is encouraging. Being able to access financing allows former armed service members that were injured while serving to re-enter civilian society. Loans come in many forms and with different conditions, so people receiving a VA disability grant need to carefully look and decide on the best loan for them.
