Improve Your Outlook and Confidence in an Emergency by Building a Food Cache

By Steve Maddox

Procrastination, economics and believing nothing will happen prevents some people from preparing an emergency food cache. Then some people may not begin until warnings or alerts are issued and in some cases, this is too late because the stores shelves are emptied. Seasonal storms come about every year at about the same time so you do have months to prepare for seasonal weather events.

Gathering emergency food supplies over time relieves some of the economic burden. However, there are storms and other disasters that can strike at anytime and to survive the aftermath you must be prepared. The days after a crisis can be as devastating as the crisis itself.

Given how many cities and towns are in financial distress these days, their response to a crisis may be limited, and citizens may be to some extent left on their own. Additionally, the deteriorating nature of the country's infrastructure makes the standard three-day supply of food recommendation outdated because it takes longer to restore the utilities with a failing power grid. You should start with at least a two-week supply of emergency food. From experience some cities have seen it take a week or longer to restore power and you need to consider friends and neighbors that may need help. Start with 14 days and then add on if you realize there may be extenuating circumstances.

Choosing the right type of foods is as important as having enough of an emergency food cache. Canned foods are what many turn to for food during a crisis, because they are relatively inexpensive and can be eating without any preparations right from the can. Consider your heating source when choosing foods because you may not have any gas or electricity, which also means you, cannot have any foods on hand, that will spoil out of refrigeration.

Another option for your emergency food cache is Meals Ready to Eat, they come in packaging in some cases, that can be immersed in hot water for heating (some include a heating mechanism) and each meal is one complete serving to include an entre and various condiments. The meals can be eaten out of the package without heating and they do not require water. Canned foods have always been a staple for emergency food supplies but for extended periods, they lack variety forcing you stockpile large amounts to have a balanced diet during a crisis. To improve the flavor, canned foods can be heated but you can eat them cold if you lack a cooking apparatus or fuel.

There are things you should consider when storing large caches of emergency food such as storage space and loss of your provisions because of damage to your home or from theft. Having your food in one place can mean you will lose the entire amount. Additionally if people realize you have supplies they may ask for help or in some extreme cases try to take your supplies by force.

You can cache your supplies on your property or on property, which you have access to at all times. Renting a storage facility can be a problem if the roads and highways are impassable and many commercial facilities are prime targets for looters during a crisis. Consider an in ground or even an above ground storage bunker so you can separate your supplies so you are assured of having supplies if one cache is destroyed or stolen.
