What Must I Charge For Shooting A Wedding?

What a minefield this is! There's no doubt that a lot of people starting their own business find this a really hard issue, especially in the beginning. Photography isn't any different. I'll explain to you below my experiences and a few of the tips I discovered on the way. First though, be sure you make everything extremely obvious in your wedding photography contract in order to stay away from any unpleasant mix-ups at a later date.

Alright, so if you are starting off seeking to determine what you should charge for your wedding photography, you needless to say would like to try and extract the most out of every customer you are able to. However ideally, you would like them to go away pleased rather than feeling ripped off and pressed in to buying or conned in to buying, even worse. And of course, you would like lots of business too. A couple of weddings per year, even at $5000 each, is not gonna pay the bills.

Specifically in early stages in my career, and if you are in that place now, it's equally important simply to obtain work to acquire practical knowledge and build up ones portfolio and referral networking system. I actually started off simply following three different photographers around at 3 different wedding events. This was not assisting work, I just asked good friends or friends of friends who were planning a wedding if I might photograph their wedding, and follow their photographer throughout the day. In exchange, they were given all of the photos I took on dvd. Next, I charged $150 for my very first paid wedding. You can do a few more at no cost if you feel more at ease this way, nonetheless do not wait around very long before charging. You will already have some expertise and people should find the money for them, and they'll take you much more seriously also.

After that job, I worked my way up to around $800 over the next couple of weddings, as I improved. With that expertise behind me, I had a decent enough portfolio to put together a good website, and to put together some decent sample albums. From now on, I began charging $2500 or more for a whole days coverage. The amount proceeded to go up progressively as my portfolio, expertise and products have improved.

Needless to say you don't need to charge that amount of money. You can run a very successful business focusing on low-cost wedding events, in which you might even do more than one per day, and possibly provide only a disc to the customer. You can also have cheaper albums at this reduced price point, and possibly not supply quite as much before and after wedding input. No matter which route you're taking, the very best of luck with it.
