Climbing Mount Kenya:Kenya Mountain Climbing - Mt Kenya National Park

By David Thompson

Astoundingly, just 16 km from the equator, 12 glaciers continue to shape the jagged roots of what was once Africa's tallest mountain. After seeing the 5199 worth of dramatic remnants that comprise e Mt Kenya (now Africa's second-highest mountain) it's easy to understand why the Kikuyu people deified it and believe it's a seat of their supreme god Ngai. Fortunately for the many travelers who try this ascent every year, Ngai doesn't seem to be concerned by the trekkers .however you would be wise not to tempt fate, so treat mount Kenya with the utmost respect. Besides being venerated by the kikuyu, Mt Kenya has the rare honor of being both a UNESCO World heritage Site and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Porters, Guides, and Cooks, We will provide one porter per person to carry all the mountain gears. 3 cooks, 3 guides: ratio of three clients 01 guides. Clients are expected to carry a day pack with a warm layer, water, and camera, waterproof. Please make sure your daypack is light as much as possible. Porters always walk either behind or ahead, in that case make sure you have all your requirement. Water, We expect you to drink 3-4 litre of water per day. We have stream and piped water on all camps. Carry water purification kit with you though the water up the mountain is safe for drinking. Food, We provide three meals per day. We have picnic lunch of sandwich. Food is rich in carbohydrates proteins, and vitamins. We ensure a balanced diet always. The food is composed of vegetables, fruits, cereals and hot drinks; chocolate, coffee and tea are served. Kindly let us know the vegetarians and vegans in advance.

Stick to existing tracks and avoid short cuts that bypass a switchback. If you blaze a new trail straight down a slope, it will erode the hillside with the next rainfall. Avoid removing plant life, as it keeps topsoil in place. Open fires aren't permitted .cook on lightweight kerosene, alcohol or shellite (white gas) stoves. Never feed the wildlife, as it messes with their digestive system and leads them to become dependent on hand-outs. If camping, try camping on existing sites. Where none exist, set up away from streams on rock or bare ground, never over vegetation.

Medical Kit, We expect that all of you are medically fit. We recommend however that you have a small medical kit with you. The guide will carry your medical kits for you. Safety and emergencies, Though the Kenya Wildlife Service has Trained Rescue Team at Mackinders and Austrian Hut with radio Communication at the KWS Mount Kenya headquarters, we recommend that every hazard measure should be taken into account to avert any harm or emergency. The Guide and a lead porter have communication radio and mobile phones which they will use to get in touch with the manned station.. A 4x4 vehicle is always on a standby at Narumoru park headquarter base in case of any emergencies. Porters are also trained on basic first aid basic and all visitors should follow and adhere to the guide guidance on evacuation of an emergency case. Please carry your insurance cover contact. So that they can be contacted by us in case of anything.
