Most young adults today strain to get financial stability on their own because they are so much used to getting help from their guardians from the time they are born. One may argue that parents have forgotten, or rather failed, to appreciate the good old way of raising up children to become independent. They would rather pamper their kids, predisposing them to failure to launch syndrome when mature and have to start a life of their own.
Ironically, the syndrome happens to be rampant among individuals who have been born in very stable backgrounds. However, when one looks further into how their parents were brought up, something totally different comes up. In most cases, parents who have grown under difficult circumstances tend to work harder to provide a better life for their children in future. They want their children to have the life they never had growing up.
On the other hand, children born in well of families neither know nor appreciate the struggles other people go through in order to put food on the table. They grow up in an environment where everything is done for them, from simple tasks such as making the bed in the morning to having rent paid for them if they live away from home. Being in such an environment makes it difficult for young people to spread their wings and explore new avenues on their own.
Individuals born in accomplished homes are faced with the challenge of having to live up to expectations from both family and society. Unfortunately, some people set these high standards for themselves without being realistic enough to work on what they can achieve and have passion for. In the process of trying to please the society, parents or their own unreal expectations, they end up miserable.
Failure to launch is caused majorly by the pressure society puts on individuals trying to make a name for themselves. It is yielding to these pressures that hinders true progress among young adults today. They end up living a life that does not really belong to them. To illustrate, a child may take up law as a career just to satisfy the wishes of their parents who are lawyers themselves and yet their true passion is in music.
Hanging out with the wrong company does have a negative effect on individuals trying to establish themselves in life. While occasional drinking of alcohol may be acceptable, it can get out of hand when your drinking buddies cheer you on to drink even more. Engaging in drug abuse to drown your sorrows and keep your head sober during working times only makes things worse for an individual in the long run.
As a result of failing to launch, adults are forced to feed off their parents instead of the reverse. There is nothing as demeaning as living under the roof of your parents as an adult and being provided for everything as though you are still a toddler. This does lower your esteem and the road to stability may become even steeper. Victims tend to move from one academic course to another in a bid to find something fulfilling.
It is important to note that this syndrome is not reserve of the rich, neither is it limited to a particular gender or geographic region. It stems from the fact that people want to make an impression in society coupled with anxiety of what the future holds. It is therefore highly crucial for young individuals to have mentors to carry them through this critical transition period.
