If we actually believe in ourselves, who we are, what our purpose is in this world and what we can offer those around us, then hardly any quantity of criticism can knock us off our center.
There's great danger in being the type of person who thrives on the compliments of others and gets destroyed by their criticisms. When this starts becoming a serious part of your character, disaster is waiting right around the corner. Why? Because when you aren't yourself in this world and you are constantly looking to others for everything you need, you end up losing yourself completely.
If you want to be yourself in this world you also have to have some thick skin.
For no real reason at all the wolves will come out after you and attempt to tear you and your reputation to shreds. Similarly, the people around you may compliment you with hollow praise and attempt to bring your ego up. If we fall into allowing both these tactics to define us, we can quickly end up in a world of hurt.
So what's really a solution here?
Trust. We must trust in who we are.
While this is undoubtedly one of the toughest things we have to work on it's also one of the most beneficial lessons you can ever learn in life. No matter what, when the problems and praise come, can still maintain who you are. The temptations of life will attempt to make you change who you are into what the world wants you to be. Don't. Be uniquely you always.
When you decide to make a change in your life, do it for yourself. Change because it's something that you've always wanted to do and it matters to you. Don't do it for anyone else. Don't do it because a magazine told you to do it. Do it because it's part of your vision and your purpose.
When you change for yourself and you live a life on your own terms, you always can look back and say that you actually lived. You lived as the man or woman who was the captain of their own ship. That's someone on a mission. That's someone who could change the world.
So start believing in yourself. You never know what you are capable of until you really go for it.
