Who Benefits When You Donate Career Clothing

If you are one of the millions of people who have been unemployed for an extended period there is help available to you. It is organizations that are soliciting others to donate career clothing. These garments are then distributed to people who may not have access to appropriate apparel to wear to a job interview. First impressions account for many people being hired in the job market and if you do not look the part you may not succeed regardless of your skill set.

There are organizations in nearly every community that will help those who are down on their luck to get back on the road to financial well being again. The philosophy is that most people prefer a hand up over a hand out and would rather be gainfully employed if given the opportunity. With a little training on how to get through a job interview and the proper clothing they can attain their goals.

Shelters for women and women with children do a great deal of this type of work. They sometimes partner with dress shops or department stores to assure their clients will have an up to date wardrobe for job seeking. They also work with the public and encourage them to help by bringing their lightly used office apparel in for donation.

The donations can be taken to community churches that support programs designed to help needier parish members get back on their feet. Most churches have areas for collection of the donations and prefer that they be delivered on hangers to prevent any wrinkling or soil collection on the garments. There is usually a list of articles that are needed and the church is happy to provide you with a copy.

For women those items include business suits, separates like skirts and blouses, blazers and slacks, shoes, unused make up, unused underwear, purses and unopened hosiery. They ask that the garments not be out dated, torn or soiled and suggest that you ask yourself if you would be comfortable wearing a particular garment before you decide to send it.

Men's clothes are a much shorter list but equally as important. They need suits that are not out dated or worn out, dress shirts and stylish ties, shoes and black stockings, belts and overcoats. They will also accept cuff links, watches and briefcases to complete the look. They do not want polo shirts, jeans, khakis or corduroy pants.

National women's organizations have rallied to help support women in shelters by partnering with local affiliates to supply them with a fitting with a professional who will assist them in selecting appropriate apparel for their interview. If they get the job they are then treated to several more outfits to allow them to have enough of a wardrobe to finish the first week of work. There is a follow up program called working wardrobe that continues to help them dress for success.

One such organization partners with local dress shops to collect the garments needed. The client is then treated to the feeling of having a personal shopper who helps select the best look for them. They spend time with them to find out what styles they like and put together several outfits for them that will get them through the process of seeking and finding a job. They also partner with businesses looking for help and assist with referrals.They truly give a helping hand up to those who want it.
