Why Corporate Social Responsibility Is So Important

In 2013, many companies are examining exactly how effective their branding is and how they are perceived by their customers and the general public. With all else being equal, companies that take an active role in promoting their corporate social responsibility programs are generally viewed more favorably than those that do not have highly visible programs. Corporate social responsibility, or CSR, exists in two different forms. One type of CSR exists when companies fund or provide resources for various social endeavors, such as donating money to a charity or enlisting employees to help out with a charitable cause. This is certainly worthwhile, and when people think about active CSR, this is the image that generally springs to mind. However, you can certainly expand your CSR and create a detailed plan that touches every part of your operation, such as ensuring that the materials you use in production are safe for people and the environment. Creating a corporate plan that helps the environment and reduces your carbon footprint might be another goal. Creating jobs and improving local or international economies is another goal you might set in your CSR plan.

In order to truly make a significant social impact, a company needs to incorporate both corporative giving and the creation of a CSR plan. For example, your business can begin using sustainable materials when creating products, reduce the amount of packaging, develop a company-wide recycling program and use other products that limit the impact on the environment. In addition, you can also donate money to environmental causes and designate paid employee time for charitable causes. This demonstrates that your company takes its social responsibility seriously at every level.

One of the reasons that corporations should have visible CSR campaigns is due to the importance and prevalence of social media. Corporations that want to protect their brand understand that social media is an integral part of public perception. When a corporation exercises social responsibility in the form of fundraising or setting up employee giving programs, using social media to promote these actions helps to create a positive branding environment, and it is a great way to engage with your audience on a deeper level that goes beyond your products or services.

Never underestimate the impact of positive public relations. Using PR is an outstanding way to build up your company's image and brand. Companies should consistently promote their charitable actions and endeavors through social media and traditional print media in order to ensure that their efforts are visible to the public.

In addition, it is wise to consider the flip side of the coin. A business that appears to have a careless disregard for any social responsibility often find their company in verbal or legal attacks often instigated by various public service organizations. If your company is striving to be as socially responsible as possible, you avoid these types of difficulties. Your company also usually will find that dealing with government regulators and politicians is far easier when you have an excellent reputation for being socially responsible.

Lastly, one of the aspects that should not be overlooked is the massive impact your social responsibility programs will have on the morale of your employees. When your managers and workers know they are working for a corporation with a social conscience, they are simply more enthusiastic about their work. These CSR plans build morale, improve teamwork and create a close-knit workplace community which in turn makes your company much more productive.
