Everything You Wanted To Know About Hypnosis

Few people haven't heard of hypnosis. It's one of those things that's everywhere. Movies, books, TV shows, you name it. Maybe you've been to a stage show where they have people speaking in foreign languages they've never heard of. Or perhaps you've got a friend who used hypnosis to quit smoking, or maybe even considered going yourself.



The bottom line is that hypnosis is much more prevalent than people think. You're actually under some kind of state of hypnosis several times throughout the day. It's just that we only think it's called hypnosis when there's some guy in front of us swinging a watch or something. The truth is that most states of hypnosis are random and happen all the time.

The basic definition of hypnosis is a relaxed, focused state of being. Your mind is paying attention to something at the exclusion of everything else. But this is what the mind does anyway. Your brain and senses are constantly being overwhelmed by tons of information. There's no way you could take it all in consciously. You are always focusing on something at the exclusion of something else. When you are in hypnosis, this limited conscious concentration is guided, rather than allowed to bounce around randomly.

But under guided hypnosis, what you are focusing on is being carefully led. For example, you might be focusing on some childhood memories to try and understand why dogs are so scary. Or maybe you are searching for your unconscious criteria to find a suitable replacement smoking.

A good example of guided hypnosis that most everybody has experienced is watching a movie in a movie theater. You pretty much give up all conscious control of your mind, and allow it to be led on a fascinating journey. This is pretty powerful stuff. The only reason we don't think of it as hypnosis is because it's entertainment, and not therapy.

But one of the most powerful ways to help somebody overcome their problems and teach them valuable life lessons is through a story. Stories are very compelling, whether they are told through a movie, a book, or some old guy telling a story around the campfire. A perfect example is Aesop's Fables. Nice, entertaining stories that deliver a very important lesson as well. Who can't forget the compelling message of the Tortoise and the Hare?

When it comes to using hypnosis for personal change, there are plenty of resources available. If you hop on down to your local library, you'll find plenty of books that teach self hypnosis.
