Photography Tips - Using Nature's Light

By Stefanie Riedel

If you are an experienced photographer or just an amateur who wants to learn about photography lighting, you might have noticed that many photographers capture their most amazing pictures using natural lighting. There are specifically two periods during the day when photographers can capture brilliant photos while taking advantage of nature's light. Often times photographers capture some of their best work during these time periods.

The emotion of the image you are capturing obviously will have an effect on the type of lighting you choose to capture your image. If you are trying to bring out the emotions of a delicate flower, then you will probably want to use natural, soft day light, whereas if you are trying to make the flower look like a dark and twisted flower from an outer world, the lighting you choose may be a lot different to make the flower look harsh.

If you are going for that more softer natural looking dewy look then you will want to use one of the two time periods throughout the day to take advantage of natural light. There are two times of the day when mother nature gives us the best lighting to capture the most beautiful photographs. The first time period is in the morning and is the first half hour after the sun rises over the horizon. The next time period is the time in which the sun sets, the half hour before the sun sets, and the half hour right after the sun sets.

There are three great reasons why these particular times of day are amazing for capturing great photographs. Those reasons have to do with the color, quality and direction the natural lighting provides.

First the color of the images will be soft and saturated, this is because at these times, there is much less white light than during other times of the day. The quality of the images taken during these times is improved because the lighting produces tonal transitions and soft shadows. The direction of the lighting will put an emphasis on shapes and textures.

One of the best times to take photographs is during the sun set. This is because the most intense display of colors occurs naturally during the 20 minutes before and after sunset. Sunrise and sunset produce different effects with lighting and at sunset the clouds will be illuminated brightening the sky. In essence the direction of the lighting has changed. During this time you can take advantage of the sky by using it as a backdrop to your photographs.

In many photography situations lighting is often used, whether it be man made, or natural. Nature provides us with some of the best lighting to produce some of the most amazing photographs. Now that you know about natural lighting you can practice using natures light and the sky as your backdrop.
