OCD Blog Helps Those In Need

By Mitzi Fitzgerald

Sometimes when life gets a little too stressful, we may rely on a tried and true coping method. This might be something we started doing to calm our nerves as young children or when we were teens. Whatever this copying strategy is, if you are now doing it more and more, but not getting the results as before, you may be suffering an obsessive compulsive disorder. An OCD blog might be a helpful place to become informed about this worrisome mental illness.

As said by scholars, there are two categories of obsessions: reactive and autogenous. Reactive obsessions come from external events. These obsessions typically about germs, contamination or accidents or the individual has a need to be perfect all the time. One example might be if someone sees a dent on their car, they may think they hit and killed a person.

Autogenous obsessions will come as more involuntary and guilt-provoking ideas and thoughts without any outside triggers. For this example, an individual may have unacceptable, spontaneous sexual or violent thoughts. The thoughts individuals with obsessive compulsive disorders have are unwanted and they cannot seem to get rid of them.

Obsessive compulsive disorder affects men, women and children of all nationalities, faiths, ethnic groups and social classes. Statistics also point to one in every 200 children under the age of ten struggling with some form of obsessive compulsive disorder. Many of these children are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

External events are what send a reactive obsessive compulsive individual into their obsessive state. The vast majority of reactive obsessive compulsive sufferers are dealing with accidents, contamination or some type of germs. An individual who is suffering from reactive obsessive compulsive disorder will react to disorder in a negative manor, trying their best to organize or order or otherwise control a situation.

Men women and children, of all races, ethnic groups, nationalities and socioeconomic statuses can be suffering from obsessive compulsive disorders. Some individuals will suffer from one type all their lives while others suffer from a combination of two or more types of obsessions. One of the main things these obsessive compulsive sufferers share is their overwhelming desire to stop their compulsion and live a normal live.

The next three on the top list of eight obsessive compulsive disorders are morality, sexual/religious and contamination/washing. There is a myth that individuals who have obsessive compulsive disorder are neat and tidy, but this is not always the case. Actually, more people who have obsessive compulsive disorders are messy and have more disorder to their homes and lives; simply because they cannot keep up with daily chores for all the compulsions and rituals they feel they need to attend to.

An OCD blog is a helpful tool for those individuals struggling with this devastating mental illness. A sense of normalcy is what everyone with obsessive compulsive disorder wants to achieve. Reading about other people's struggles and successes over this life altering illness can be a lifeline in their time of need.
