Use These Great Tips To Increase Your Photography Skills

By Dorsey T. Emanus

Photography is daunting to some individuals. Although anyone can snap a photo, the best photographers out there are skilled artists who have trained for the job. Don't worry about whether your natural talent is enough. Instead, focus on learning how to take good photographs. Remember, too, that every photographer is an individual. Once you learn some techniques, you can take photographs in many different ways. The important thing is that you're satisfied with your results.

Keep your arms close to you while holding the camera, and position your hands on each side and the bottom of the camera. By holding your camera in this way, you'll lessen the chance of moving the camera during the shot; thereby keeping it framed and steady for the best shot. Additionally, by cradling your hands around and under the camera, it will prevent accidental dropping of the device.

Have some fun experimenting with different expressions, perspectives and scales. Place ordinary objects in extraordinary settings or ones that draw attention because they are out of context. Develop your compositions in order to create a unique outlook on a common object.

If the subject of your photo is a large structure or an expansive natural feature, have a person stand within the shot's frame for scale. When you include a person, animal, or some other familiar object, the viewer gains a point of reference. This will help them grasp the size of the primary item in your photograph.

The camera settings should be kept simple. Master one control at a time, such as the shutter speed or the aperture, before taking on the next. Doing this focuses your attention on the image itself, rather than playing with dials while you lose your subject.

When taking pictures, avoid overcast skies. A gray sky is going to make your pictures look washed-out. Black and white photos can work great for an overcast sky. If, on the other hand, the sky is clear and blue, include more of it but consider how the additional light affects the rest of your shot.

If the subject you are shooting needs a powerful appearance, aim from a low level upwards. Take the picture angled downwards to demean the object. There are great times for using these particular techniques; trial and error is the best way to figure out when those times are.

If you're just becoming accustomed to photographing a new type of subject or background, make sure you spend some time taking practice shots. Practice shots can give you the confidence you need to take the best photos, even in unfamiliar situations. You have very little control over your surroundings, so realize that changes in weather or scenery can provide different types of lighting. Make sure to snap plenty of practice shots to make sure you're getting the right shot.

You should try using ordinary things when trying to get inspiration. Try composing artistically interesting pictures of ordinary things. Anything from a sink to a pencil can help you experiment with composition and form. Taking unique pictures is a matter of developing your artistic skills, and learning to put your personality into what you are doing. Give yourself a challenge to make it interesting.

Make sure to read the camera's manual. Often times a manual is very long and drawn out. They are usually thrown away or stored somewhere and forgotten. Instead of discarding the manual, invest some time in absorbing the material it contains. By taking the time to read the manual and familiarize yourself with your camera, you will eliminate frustration and take much better pictures.

Use limitation to help you become more creative. For instance, you can base a whole set of pictures around a specific subject. You can improve your technique by taking many pictures from the same location. Working under such limitations will spur you to think creatively and take more experimental photos.

Taking boring pictures is a common frustration every beginner encounters. It just takes research and asking for critiques of your work to learn what to do and how to get better. Start taking better photos today by implementing these tips.
