The Basics of Golf 101

By Dr. Craig Denton

This Golf 101 lesson is a brief overview of the items you will need to play the game. Of course, the main thing you will require is a set of clubs. A golf club consists of three components, the head, the shaft and the grip. The club head can be made of a selection of materials, from the general zinc and aluminum that are used in clubs proposed for beginners to high-end titanium, which generates club heads that are very strong while still remaining light in weight. Golf club shafts can be manufactured from graphite or steel, with graphite being the most popular material for golfers who want a lighter shaft on their clubs or those who have limited strength, such as females and senior-aged golfers. Grips are made of rubber and should be altered on a regular basis since they wear out and deplete their hold over time.

Golf 101 Types of Clubs

According to the rules of golf, your bag can have a maximum of fourteen clubs, which frequently consist of three wood clubs, seven iron clubs, a putter and a hybrid club.

Woods are clubs for hitting long shots and are hollow-bodied and large-headed. There are a number of types of woods based on the loft (angle of the club face) that affects the trajectory of the ball and controls distance. An ordinary golfer carries a driver (also called a 1-iron) that has the lowest loft of seven-degrees and twelve-degrees, a three iron (fifteen-degree to eighteen-degree lofts) and a five (twenty-degree to twenty-two degree lofts). Countless golfers may even carry 7 and 9 irons.

Irons are the preferred clubs when you are 200 yards or less from the green. The shorter the distance, the higher the iron you will utilize. Most bags include three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and 9 irons.

Wedges are clubs with elevated lofts that are used when golfers are very close to the green and are fashioned for greater shot control and shot shaping. The most common club in your bag is probably the pitching wedge, which has a loft of 46 to 48 degrees. Other wedges, which have correspondingly greater lofts, are the approach wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge and high-lob wedge.

Putters are the clubs that are utilized to get the ball into the hole when you are undoubtedly on the green. There are a vast range of putter styles, featuring short, long, belly, bent, heel-toe and so on.

If you are starting out, however, you can buy a beginners set while you are still checking out the game and then invest in a complete set once you've decided you like the game enough to play regularly. A starter set should include at least a wood (a driver or a three wood), three, five, seven and nine irons, a pitching wedge and a putter. And, of course, you will want a bag to carry your clubs in.

Golf 101 Other Essential Equipment

The other equipment you will need include golf balls, a golf glove, that you will wear on the other hand from the one you use for swinging to prevent blisters, and golf tees. At some point, once you have become a serious golfer, you might also want to purchase a laser golf range finder that allows you to determine how far you need to hit the ball so that you can use the suitable club.
