The year was 1983. "A Christmas Story", the Christmas holiday classic, which plays as a 24-hour marathon every year putting loads of smiles on the faces of fans and newcomers to the tradition alike, takes us into the sheer laughter, comedy, fun and awe of Christmas. Based in the city of Hammond, Indiana, the story is told through the lenses (which break near the end of the movie) of Ralphie, who at nine years old, is based on some of the somewhat biographical short stories of Jean Shepherd, an author and radio personality of that time. The film itself is set in 1940 (although the year it was made was really 1983) which explains detailed production design of the props throughout all the different scenes, most notably the A Christmas Story Leg Lamp.
The old man in the film, the nine-year old boys dad, is a rather tall man who could easily be the handyman of the town. In the movie he fixed a furnace and a flat tire on the side of the road while swearing up a storm. Even with that he is Ralphie's role model. The classic Christmas flick is a journey through Ralphie's life as he tries desperately to find a way to ask Santa for an air rifle, however, it also takes us on the journey of the old man as he awaits for his A Christmas Story Leg Lamp, which we hear referred to as a "major award" throughout the rest of the live action story. When his letter arrives in the mail about his new award he just won, and should be expecting, he whoops and dances with joy at the thought of it showing up. The delivery guys brings a large wooden box to the front door marked "Fra-gee-lay" (so the old man thinks) and wonders what could possibly be inside along with the rest of the family.
Like a kid in a candy store at Christmas time, the old man dives into the bottom of the crate, or tries to, and throws shipping paper all around, and then, in sheer amazement, lifts out the now historical A Christmas Story Leg Lamp we all know and love today. It is a 45" women's leg made of plastic with a fishnet stocking and high heel shoe attached to it. Not only that, but it has fringe all around it just like a sexy skirt. He holds it up for everybody to see and exclaims, "It's a lamp!"
His wife looks on, aghast and horrified, as he proudly plops the lamp shade, adorned with fringe, on top of the lamp, carefully sets the lamp in their front window, and plugs it in. He runs outside to the sidewalk to admire it from the street, and he proudly directs his wife to move it a few inches this way and that, ensuring proper placement so that all of the neighborhood can see his major award, the A Christmas Story Leg Lamp.
Ralphie's mother is embarrassed and mortified at having the risque A Christmas Story Leg Lamp lit up on display in her living room window. One day, under mysterious circumstances which went down in family and Cleveland Street lore as never quite resolved, there is a crashing sound. Ralphie's mother sheepishly informs the Old Man that she was watering her plants and coyly admits that she accidentally broke his lamp. Ralphie couldn't be sure, but he thought that late that night, he heard the sounds of "Taps" being played. The A Christmas Story Leg Lamp is so iconic that fans of the film can now tour the actual restored house from the film, which is all decked out for Christmas, and buy a full-size replica of the A Christmas Story Leg Lamp online.
