Microsoft Excel : 2007 Or 2010?

By Tony Angelo

Microsoft Excel has been a favorite component of the office suite for several years now. The program is nearly unmatched in its ability to collect scads of data and reproduce them into easily understood graphic organizers such as graphs and spreadsheets. Just like any endeavor that hopes to remain fresh and relevant, Excel periodically undergoes changes in order to address user concerns and improve its overall performance. Microsoft Excel recently experienced an upgrade from the 2007 version to the 2010 model. Following are some of the main differences between Microsoft Excel 2007 and Excel 2010.

Macros have become the calling card of the Excel program, and the lack of a recording feature on 2007 has been fixed for 2010. This was not a big issue to those who did not need such a feature, but many users did and called for this change. Additionally, the calculation speed has increased in 2010, but this is so minor that most users will not notice any difference. Where this will be noticed, however, is in such computationally intensive functions such as Monte Carlo methods that 2007 could not handle well.

The capacity of Excel 2010 has increased over 2007 as well. The number of rows and columns allowed has increased, which has been an improvement in many subsequent releases of the program over previous versions. Sometimes large models are necessary due to a high number of data points, and 2007 limited this number to 32,000 points. Excel 2010 bases the limit on available memory; therefore, when constructing a chart, more data points are allowed.

Fill patterns were removed for the 2007 edition of Microsoft Excel, but enough people made their voices heard for its inclusion on the 2010 version. Additionally, users who performed a good amount of conditional formatting were left frustrated when these operations often pushed Excel 2007 past its capabilities. 2010 has little trouble in this function. Small charts known as sparklines have been added to Excel 2010 for quick reference. 2010 also provides more accurate statistical and mathematical operations than 2007 due to the new algorithm featured in the upgrade.

Though there are not nearly as many differences between Microsoft Excel 2007 and 2010 as there were between 2003 and 2007, there are still enough improvements to make 2010 an obvious step up. Users will appreciate the increased capacity and the improved mathematical accuracy. The ability to perform parallel data functions speeds things up as well. These changes will only help the performance of this popular program.
