Emotional Abuse By A Psychotherapist

By Lucia Weeks

People who have suffered psychological abuse and trauma would often go to psychotherapists in order to open up to these professionals and to also receive treatment. However, even though many people would entrust their mental health to psychotherapists, there are actually some psychotherapists who would make things worse. Alarmingly, there are a lot of cases of emotional abuse by a psychotherapist even if the therapist is not aware of it.

Now what many people are not aware of is that there are indeed a lot of therapists who do not act the way they are supposed to when around patients. Now there is a code of ethics that the professionals follow with regard to professionalism. Now there is actually a reason as to why every therapist has to follow this code of ethics.

Of course there is a thing as getting too close to the patient as this kind of friendly relationship is not healthy. It is for this reason that a line must always be drawn between the patient and the therapist. If ever this line should be broken, then there might be some negative things that might happen with the patient.

Now even though many psychotherapists do not see a problem with this, the problem here would be that if a therapist would be too comfortable, he may say something to the patient that may trigger a negative effect. People who are mentally unstable are actually very sensitive to certain triggers. If a psychotherapist would activate this kind of trigger by accident, then the patient will definitely suffer from a negative effect.

Another way to emotionally abuse patients would be to be too tactless toward them. Now there is a fine line between being tactless and being professional. As a therapist, one should never say things that may sound cold toward a patient because it will just make the patient numb and not want to open up to the therapist.

Now if ever the patient does get hurt, he will not open up to the therapist anymore and the therapy session will be rendered useless. As a psychotherapist, one should be able to understand his patient and diagnose him. From that diagnosis, he will be able to create a solution to the problem.

Now some of the bad effects of this phenomenon would be worsening of the condition of a patient. If the patient is suffering from trauma, his fear of people might worsen and he might just clam up. Depression is also something that may stem up from this kind of situation.

So if one would want to become a therapist, he has to always take note that he is taking up an extremely important job. He should always prioritize helping his patients who are in need instead of thinking about the money they can give him. Therapists hold in their hands the lives of their patients and they are supposed to make them better. No patient should suffer anymore type of abuse especially from their therapist.
