Fulfilling Your Bucket List Needs Commitment

Bucket lists were introduced as a motivational tool to be used by critically and chronically ill patients. Relatives, friends and medical personnel often work together to ensure the patient experiences the fulfilment of a dream that they believed was outwith their reach. The dream can be anything, but some of the more achievable experiences include meeting a pop star or someone else famous, attending an event or making a special trip. The idea of fulfilling your bucket list is attractive for many people.

How many items are included, is a personal choice. Keeping the number of tasks on the agenda to ten or twelve, helps to keep you motivated. Giving yourself too many tasks can demotivate you. Try to come up with a mix of tasks ranging from easy to complex. If you start with some of the easiest tasks, such as making that phone call, or tackling that clear-out of a wardrobe which you have been meaning to do for ages, the feel good factor will help motivate you to try another task.

Again, there are no hard and fast rules about timescales for completing any tasks. However, you may find it helpful if you can say that you want to complete these tasks in the next year, ten years or by the time you reach a certain age. Leaving the timescales open ended could see you always putting some of the tasks off and never achieving your goals.

If you are unused to setting yourself goals, starting off with simple things that can stretch you, without overwhelming you, will build your self-confidence as you see the tasks completed. Use positive statements when compiling, thinking or talking about your tasks, by using I will, rather than I would like, or I should. A positive attitude can go a long way to helping you achieve important goals.

Some of the goals such as trips to another country or taking up a hobby or activity may have a financial cost. Plan ahead and allow yourself the enough time to save up to fund your goal. Taking the time to research and plan a trip or an activity is all part of the exercise.

Activities, hobbies and travel can be much more fun when shared with someone close to you. Even if friends are family are not going to actively participate, telling them about goals allows them to provide you with support and encouragement. You can mix and match the tasks so that you can do some on yourself and some with other people.

If you want some ideas for compiling a list, you will find some simple and some very unusual goal ideas on the internet. It is a great way to motivate yourself into trying out some new hobbies or activities and allows you to decide if you want to pursue something. Set goals or tasks that you really want to try, or you may quickly lose interest.

Fulfilling your bucket list will challenge physical and emotional strengths. Successfully achieving a goal should leave you feeling good, and help to boost motivation to tackle the next task. The whole experience needs to be a challenge and an opportunity for you to try something new.
