An Introduction to the Guayabera

By Randolph Todd

Few people would not recognize the guayabera on first sight. People from Latino cultures are all familiar with it, and some even call it the national shirt of Cuba (although there are those who argue that it could be the same for Mexico). To this day, more people are falling in love with it.

The design has not exactly stayed static, however. A Cuban peasant's shirt, it is claimed, served as the inspiration for the pattern. That said, that base design has certainly evolved quite a bit over time.

The basic form of the shirt is a lightweight sleeved button-up top primarily worn by men. There are pleated hems striped down the front of the shirt. Nearly all variations have four pockets too.

To this day, no one is sure exactly why the shirt was developed to have four pockets instead of just two. Historians are still pushing around theories to explain the number of pockets. Tiny fruits or nuts might have been the usual contents of the pockets, some say.

Guayabera shirts are clearly tops meant to suit their particular locale and the people who used to wear them even back in the old days. The lightness of the textiles used for it contribute to its popularity, as it suits climates that other sorts of clothing just do not perform well in. And if you need to store a lot of things on your person all the time, the pockets can help you there.

It is also fashionable. If this shirt design has endured over the ages, it cannot simply be due to the convenience of its design but must surely be partly due to the appeal of its appearance. Indeed, there have been more and more alterations to it for various purposes, fashion included.

For example, one can find formal types of it made out of top-quality cloth. The most common versions have full sleeves on them. Most of the time, they have quite a bit more decoration on the front or on the yoke.

You may also purchase some sized specifically for children. These often appear to be miniaturized versions of the normal-sized tops. The result is a charming piece of clothing for your children when you need to bring them to a party or special occasion but do not want them feeling suffocated by a tiny coat and tie.

There are even dress versions being made now for women. They have been getting more popular of late. A lot of females are starting to wear them these days.

There is so much more that can be done with the guayabera, though. It is not inconceivable that you shall be confronted with something like ten more versions of it in the near future, so you can just look forward to that if you love this shirt design. Who can really predict what designers shall do next with this classic style?
