Are You Stressed Out By Your Job?

By Clifford Gill

If you're working, then for sure you know workplace stress. It could be caused by a boss who is very demanding, or a coworker who doesn't pull his or her weight. Or maybe you have a typically stressful position, such as medicine or law. While stress is healthy to a certain extent, too much of it can drive you to a hospital or maybe an early grave. Bad stress can lead you to spending a handful on hospital bills.

Having gotten brass tacks out of the way, we believe you need to have the right stress management strategy at work. While some stressors, such as your boss or your goldbricking co-worker, cannot be changed, it is certainly possible to manage stress and preserve your precious health.

Back when we were much younger, most Americans worked 40 hours a week - this figure is now up to 47. This amounts to 47 hours, with some even working up to 49 hours on a weekly basis. As a result, people are getting more stressed out both at home and at work. Unreasonable working hours happen to be a leading cause of divorces.

Ask yourself questions about whether you are working a healthy number of hours per week or not. Is it possible to do your job even with less hours of work? Would your co-workers be willing to do some of your tasks? Can you develop a more flexible schedule? This is a very effective way of reducing job-related stress and the risks that come with it.

Overworking can cause many health problems. You might become sick more often, which will force you to call in sick at work. Work absenteeism is costing American companies a lot of money, which makes workplaces less productive.

With the current economic climate still hovering like a black cloud above us, job security is another major stressor. Companies are getting bankrupt as well and there seems to be no way to stop the bleeding. This lack of job security leads many employees to live in fear and paranoia of losing their jobs or being told that their company is closing down. Retirement funds, on the other hand, are another great source of concern. It is because of these factors that employees now have little loyalty to their employers, stress for both all parties involved.

The workplace environment has changed drastically in the past few decades, and so should the way we look at things at work. Employees need to try to reduce their stress, even though they might not feel secure in their jobs. That might mean opening a separate retirement fund and making regular contributions toward retirement. A stress-free life isn't handed to you on a silver platter, so do your part and be proactive. A little good old fashioned self-help can go a long way these days. You will feel a sense of freedom, and less unhealthy stress.
