My Amlodipine Meds and Don't Call Me "Stupid"

By B. Gregory Sloan

When my lovely bride and I were going through the stage of our lives in which we began rearing young offspring, our 3 weren't permitted to utter the major "S" word. No sir, the big "S" word was not allowed in our home. Our little ones weren't permitted to call each other or anyone else-"stupid." Sure, one might just consider that there are plenty of additional words that should be banned in a family unit before that one, and there were, but "stupid" was definitely one that was not tolerated.

That's one reason that I got to thinking about that word in regards to my own way of life and discipline patterns a few days ago. At 54, there are actually a number of prescribed medicines that I have to take as needed. However, the most important one, the drug that I am actually directed to take daily, is the medication in which I am the most inclined to overlook. The medication is called Amlodipine, which is given for hypertension(high blood pressure).

But here's the deal. My degree of high blood pressure isn't exceptionally high, or in the typical "danger zone," however, for the "Silent Killer' that we know hypertension to be, it's nothing except "stupid" for me not to put an extremely high priority on swallowing that tiny pill to make sure that my blood pressure levels stay at a safe level. Hypertension can be the cause of numerous dreadful things, including stroke, heart attack, and more. We simply cannot play around with it.

So, exactly why am I more likely to overlook the amlodipine than other meds? Well, it's because those hypertension symptoms aren't crying out. I have a small disc condition in my lower back for which I take prescription medication, and when it acts up, it truly lets me know. But, this is not necessarily so when it concerns my blood pressure. It's a sneaky condition. With very many disorders, the symptoms are certainly going to let you know that it is time for medication. But no, my hypertension doesn't pull on my coat sleeve and give me a reminder.

So, duh ... stupid me. Why don't I put a reminder on my iPhone or something like I would do for other essential responsibilities? That way I will likely not forget that extremely important capsule. It just ain't that hard! However, it's absolutely important.

So, okay, I still hope that my children do not call each other stupid. However, this is certainly one case in point in which I think their dad has pretty well fallen into that category occasionally. High blood pressure is very dangerous. Let's follow our physicians' directions and do the deal. Let's save our lives.
