General Information You Should Know On A Dentist

By Adriana Noton

Everybody has the phone number of their doctor, emergency services, family, and friends. You should also have the phone number of a good dentist to hand as well. Your teeth are a vital part of your daily life; if they don't work properly then neither will you. Ask yourself why, when you get a toothache, you may feel sick, or get a headache, or something more serious. This is because your teeth have a direct connection to every part of your body and, when one goes wrong, maybe something else will as well.

If you are one of the lucky ones you have been with the same dental practice all your life and have a good relationship with him or her. However, sometimes the need arises to find a new surgery and this is not an easy task.

If you are using the phone book to try and find a new dental surgeon make sure you ask pertinent questions. You need to know if the treatment offered at the practice is right for you. How much they charge and how long you have to wait for an appointment are all good questions to ask. Also, find out if they offer emergency treatment.

If an emergency appointment is the only way to see a new technician, take note of their attention to detail, whether they listen to you and talk to you about your problem. Check that they are following health and safety requirements by wearing disposable gloves, masks and using sterile equipment.

Check that they are actually qualified to be carrying out the work on your teeth. All recognized surgeons will either have a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree or a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) and their certificates of qualification should be displayed on the wall of the surgery.

More than one type of dentistry exists. It isn't just a case of popping along to your nearest practice and receiving the treatment you need. If more complex treatment is required then you need to see a specialist. If your teeth are not straight or you suffer from overbite then you need to see an orthodontist. A prosthodontist will be required if you need false teeth, either one or a full set, or you need a bridge fitted.

Such areas of expertise include orthodontistry for teeth straightening, bite problems and the fitting of braces; periodontistry which deals with gum disease and problems with the bones and ligaments around the teeth; prosthodontistry which is responsible for dentures, teeth implants and bridges; and cosmetic surgery for teeth whitening, veneers, tooth shaping and crowns.

Whether you just need a check-up, a cavity filling or something more complex, there is a dentist somewhere who can help you. Regular check-ups are important to keep both you and your teeth healthy. Remember, bad teeth equals bad health.
